Window Air Conditioner

The window air conditioner is sometimes referred to as the room conditioner and it is in fact the simplest form of air conditioner that is available in the market. It has a single unit where all the components are placed. They are mounted either on windows or on walls. However, the major components of a window air conditioner are the following. They are the evaporator, the condenser, the expansion valve and the compressor. All these components have function of their own but they are all assembled into a single metal box that gets installed into a window opening. In case of window air conditioners, the hot air vents form the back of the machine while the condenser coil and a fan recirculates the indoor air.

The next set of information that we need to have is the functioning model of the window air conditioners. When a window air conditioner is switched on, immediately the blower also starts functioning and after a few seconds the compressor also starts operating. It must be noted here that the evaporator coil gets cooled the moment the compressor begins to function. While the blower which is located towards the back of the machine starts drawing the room air which is at a higher temperature and also other dust particles that is part of the air inside the room. While the inside air from a room moves towards the blower, it first passes through the filter so that it can be cleared off from all kinds of pollutants.

As a next step the air passes through the cooling coil where two distinct steps take place. First of all as the temperature of the cooling coil is much lower than the air which has come from the inside of the room, the refrigerant has to absorb the excess heat from the air. Due to this process the air inside the room becomes chilled and is much lower than the outside temperature thus making it comfortable for the members inside the room. As part of the second process it is seen that some dew is formed on the surface of the cooling coil. This is because the temperature of the cooling coil is lower than dew point temperature of the air. Hence, the moisture from the air is also reduced thus lowering the relative humidity of the air. Thus, when air passes over the cooling coil both the temperature and the relative humidity of the air reduces.

Once this process has taken place the chilled air passes through the small duct inside the air conditioner and it is then thrown outside the air conditioner through the opening that is present in the front panel. This same chilled air enters the room thereby reducing the relative humidity and the temperature at the same time.
